The SSWA existed informally for a few years before coming together formally under the name. The organization held our first meeting and was officially founded on May 24th, 2021 by two students from Seiling, Oklahoma.

We created the SSWA out of our shared passion for the weather and climate, as well as an interest in high-altitude projects, giving way to the second S in our acronym. While our group still occasionally operates projects involving space, like our ongoing hydrogen line observations and weather satellite reception, we now mainly focus on weather-specific studies.

Since our founding, the SSWA has continued building cost-effective high-performance instrumentation to measure the environment. We are constantly performing field research in all types of weather events, not just severe weather. The SSWA designs and deploys high-accuracy, rugged instrument packs capable of operating in extreme environments, including inside tornado cores and drifting across the world's oceans.

Temperature and Humidity

Aspiration Fan
Improves measurements during hot days ($70 @ Multiple)

Pressure
Isolates the pressure sensor from wind ($280 @ R.M. Young)

Precipitable Water
Measures moisture content through the entire atmosphere ($500 @ Multiple)

Package 1 - $100/year
Banner image (designed by us or you) displayed in carousel at top of home page.

Package 2 - $200/year
Package 1 + image displayed in carousel on our live stream, displayed on chase vehicle.

SSWA's ongoing operating costs are about $40/mo or $480/yr. Anything after this contributes to station upgrades and additions which can be seen in the previous section.
